MRV REGULATION

ABOUT MRV

Marine transport produces an estimated 1 billion tonnes of CO2 annually, making up about 2.5% of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. This has increased by about 70% since 1990 and is estimated to increase a further 50% to 250% by 2050 depending on future economic and energy developments.

This is not compatible with the Paris climate conference (COP21) agreement to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. An agreement that is legally binding and that was signed by 195 countries.

On the upside, it is estimated that greenhouse gas emissions from shipping could be reduced by up to 75% by applying operational measures and existing technologies. Many of these measures are also cost effective, leading to reduced fuel cost and goodwill with customers and the general public.

The first step to achieve this is to monitor and report emissions to create a baseline and better understanding and in 2015 the EU adopted the 2015/757 Shipping MRV Regulation, with the IMO set to follow worldwide. The basics of the regulation is that ships over 5,000 gross tonnage need to annually report their emissions in a verifiable and approved way by the year 2018.
